Year Six

Year 6

Year 6 is the final year at High March.

In the Autumn term the girls are busy with the Bucks County 11+ examinations and preparing for the independent senior school entrance examinations which take place between November and January. As well as thorough preparation for these examinations and academic scholarship papers, some girls will also be encouraged to apply for All-rounder, Art, Music or Sport Scholarships.

Once the academic examinations are over, the curriculum is broadened to include a number of extra subjects and activities. Each year there is a Year 6 production which involves both the Drama and Music departments and the girls look forward to this with great excitement. The allocation of parts and beginning of rehearsals start once the examinations for the independent senior schools are over. In recent years, the girls have performed ‘Grease’, ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Bugsy Malone’ and ‘Annie’. The girls benefit hugely from the performing opportunity, growing in poise and confidence as they prepare for performances to the school, parents and the wider community.

In Year 6 the girls also have the opportunity to go on the annual skiing trip to Austria in February and to a French Chateau for three days in the Summer term.

Positions of responsibility are given to all girls in Year 6. Each pupil becomes a Prefect and these roles include Head Girls, Sports Captains, Swimming Captains, House Captains and Junior Road Safety Officers. When allocating Prefect roles, each girl’s talents are taken into account so that they are given a role they will be able to perform well. For example, girls with musical, artistic or dramatic talent may become Music, Art or Drama Prefects. Girls who display a particular interest in Science may become Science Prefects and girls who enjoy reading may become Library Prefects.

Our aim is that by the end of Year 6 the girls leave us feeling confident and self-assured. They should feel proud of their accomplishments and ready for their move to senior school.
