Back in time to the Victorian era

04.03.2026

Year 6 recently visited the Victorian School Museum in Hitchin for an immersive day of historical learning. The pupils dressed in Victorian-style pinafores, took part in physical drill and explored a carefully restored Victorian house.

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the lesson in an authentic Victorian classroom. The girls practised writing on slates and used steel‑nibbed fountain pens with ink pots—an experience which gave them a real sense of school life in the 19th century. In true Victorian fashion, one pupil was (light‑heartedly!) made to wear a dunce’s cap, while another received a mock caning for “poor behaviour”—all safely simulated, of course, and to much amusement from the rest of the class!

The girls finished the day, feeling quite thankful that schooling has changed considerably since Victorian times!
