Celebrating High March’s Centenary

On Wednesday 9^th September, pupils enjoyed a wonderful day of activities celebrating 100 years of High March.

Upper School pupils were divided into mixed-age groups and took part in a carousel of activities including dance, art, fact-finding and musicals.

Children explored popular musicals from across the decades, including Meet Me in St Louis, The Sound of Music and Wicked. In art, they travelled through a century of creativity, learning about ceramic artist Clarice Cliff in the 1920s, Bridget Riley and Op Art in the 1960s, Keith Haring’s graffiti-inspired artwork in the 1980s (created outdoors!), before finishing with modern emoji-inspired designs.

The dance sessions introduced pupils to styles from different eras, including the Charleston, Rock and Roll, Beatlemania, Glam Rock, Night Fever, and more contemporary favourites such as Steps and Taylor Swift.

Pupils also created fact files exploring different periods from the last century. Topics included toys and games, fashion, and technology. Each group then collaborated to produce a poster showcasing what they had learned.

Junior House also enjoyed a fantastic day of activities. Every child took part in learning the Charleston, while also creating bunting to display their favourite High March memories. Children challenged themselves to see how many times they could jump into a hoop or how many balls they could catch in 100 seconds. They took part in a High March quiz, which included finding landmarks and key locations around the school. Other activities included building a model of the school using 100 construction bricks and creating a collage imagining what High March might look like in 100 years’ time.

The day was rounded off with everyone coming together to take part in a ‘100’ photo at Junior House: this was followed by a celebratory cutting of the centenary cake by the Headmistress, Mrs Gater, ably assisted by our two Head Girls.

It was a memorable day of celebration, creativity and teamwork, marking a very special milestone in the history of High March.
