In Celebration of VE Day

13.05.2025

Last week, pupils and staff came together to commemorate Victory in Europe (VE) Day, which marked the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945.

A special assembly offered an educational look at how VE was celebrated, not only in Britain but also around the world in countries which contributed to the war effort, such as India and Kenya. Pupils learned about the global significance of the day and reflected on how children like themselves might have felt – relieved, joyful and hopeful of a peaceful future ahead. The assembly featured historic photos of jubilant street parties, crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace and the iconic music of Glenn Miller, which helped set the mood for the day. Pupils were fascinated by the traditional party food of the time, which included jam sandwiches, jelly and homemade cakes, often shared in communities, which were still under rationing. On Thursday at 12noon, School observed a two-minute silence in classrooms – a moment of thanksgiving and reflection for the sacrifices made and the peace which followed.

The commemorations provided a meaningful opportunity for pupils to connect with history and understand the importance of remembrance and unity.
