Learning valuable life skills

26.01.2026

Pupils from Years 1 to 6 have recently taken part in our annual comprehensive programme of First Aid workshops, gaining valuable skills which will help them respond calmly, confidently and with compassion in an emergency.

Year 1 girls were introduced to the basics of keeping themselves and others safe. A key focus for our youngest pupils was learning how to make a 999 call, including what number to dial, what information to give and how to speak clearly to the operator.

Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 built on this foundation with enthusiasm, taking part in progressively more detailed sessions. Their workshops covered a wide range of essential First Aid topics, including how to support someone with a broken arm, what to do if someone is experiencing asthma difficulties, how to deal with bleeding, and recognising the signs of strokes and heart attacks. Pupils also practised placing someone into the recovery position. Alongside these practical skills, they learned the importance of staying calm, thinking clearly and acting with compassion.

Year 6 continued the progression with specialist CPR training, learning how to carry out chest compressions and rescue breaths using resuscitation manikins. They also took part in role‑play scenarios, putting their knowledge into practice and gaining insight into what it feels like to step into the role of a first aider.

These life‑saving lessons provide our pupils with practical knowledge and give them the confidence that they would know what to do in an emergency. We are incredibly proud of the maturity, enthusiasm and teamwork shown by all year groups throughout the week.
