Stop! Think! Act!

The Year 5 trip to Hazard Alley was an engaging and empowering experience, equipping the girls with valuable knowledge and skills to help them stay safe in a wide range of situations – both in the real world and online.
During the day, the girls worked their way through 12 everyday scenarios, including fire and water safety; safety in the home; road, car, cycling and railway safety; as well as bullying and peer pressure, encouraging them to recognise when they might be feeling unsafe, consider what action they could take, and identify trusted people they could go to for help.
A key message throughout was the importance of making sensible choices and understanding consequences. To support this, the girls were taught a simple but powerful strategy: Stop, Think, Act.
A dedicated online‑safety workshop formed another important part of the visit. Year 5 learnt about keeping personal information safe and what is – and is not – appropriate to share online.
The session also raised awareness of age ratings for common apps and platforms, including some that pupils were surprised to learn are rated 18+. They discussed why these ratings exist and what they mean for their safety, as well as the importance of asking an adult to create a suitable profile when using certain services.
Through practical activities, the children were encouraged to think critically about online interactions. One task involved analysing a series of photos and an online profile to figure out who someone might really be talking to – highlighting the dangers of making assumptions. Another scenario explored the risks faced by a girl chatting online, helping pupils learn to spot warning signs and unsafe behaviour.
