Success in the BBC 500 Words Competition
28.01.2026

One of our pupils in Year 5, Aria, recently wrote and submitted a story for the BBC 500 Words competition, which is the biggest children’s story writing competition for 5 – 11-year-olds in the UK. Aria successfully made it through to round two – about 5000 stories. What an amazing achievement! Her story was all about a butterfly and how changes in life can feel big, but they don’t have to be scary — in fact, they can be good.
Aria spent quite a while working on the piece, starting with planning the plot. After writing her first draft, she took time to check it through carefully. She even read it aloud to her family, and this helped her make a few final tweaks.
Aria said she really enjoyed the whole process — planning, writing, and sharing her work — and that she would happily take part in another competition in the future. What an inspiration you are, Aria! Keep writing!
