The world of bees

At the end of last week, we were visited by a local beekeeper, Meriet Duncan.  In addition to being a beekeeper, Meriet is also an author and has written a book called, ‘Betsy Valentine and the Honeybees.’  Meriet brought copies of her book for the girls to purchase and they were delighted to find that she had signed their books for them.

As part of the visit, the girls learned about the difference between honeybees, bumblebees, hornets and wasps.  It is extraordinary to know that each bee only lives for five weeks and that one teaspoon of honey is the life work of twelve honeybees.  Meriet brought all sorts of bee related materials for the children to examine.  A highlight was when the children were given the opportunity to dress up in child-sized beekeeper protective garb.

Everyone agreed it had been a very informative and fun morning.
