The Year 5 ‘Singing Picture’ Competition

The Year Five girls recently participated in the annual ‘Singing Picture’ competition, in which every girl has to learn the nominated song and perform it as a solo in front of the Headmistress and the Director of Music.

The set piece this year was an excerpt from the traditional Welsh folk song, ‘The Ash Grove’ (Welsh: ‘Llwyn Onn’), which tells of a sailor’s love for ‘Gwen of Llwyn’. The song presented notably challenging pitching demands, as well as the need for lyrical and measured phrasing.  We were excited to see all of the girls rising to these challenges with abundant musicality and control. As always, it was very difficult for the judges to decide on the winners, but we had four girls who were specially mentioned, two girls who were commended, another two girls who were highly commended and one overall winner.
