Laurel wins the Singing Shield
20.05.2019
The past week saw the annual ‘Singing Picture’ competition for Year Five girls in which every girl has to learn the nominated song and perform it as a solo in front of the Headmistress and the Director of Music.
The set piece this year was an excerpt from the traditional Welsh folk song, ‘The Ash Grove’ (Welsh: ‘Llwyn Onn’), which tells of a sailor’s love for ‘Gwen of Llwyn’. The song presented notably challenging pitching demands, as well as the need for lyrical and measured phrasing. We were excited to see all of the girls rising to these challenges with abundant musicality and control. As always, it was very difficult for the judges to decide on the winners, but our congratulations go to Clementine and Elisabeth, who were commended, Freya and Lois who were highly commended and our winner, Laurel.
Well done to all girls in Year Five.
